CruiseLink

Disney Cruise Line app chat

Free, on every ship, and it does not need an internet package — just the ship's own wifi network, which costs nothing to join. Along with Royal Caribbean and Princess, Disney is among the lines that simply include this rather than charging for it.

What you get

The Navigator app carries text messaging and group chat between guests on your sailing, alongside the things you would expect: the daily schedule, dining, character meets, port times.

For families this is genuinely useful, because the group chat is the bit that matters — one thread for everybody rather than chasing people individually.

It reaches anyone on your sailing using the app, not only your own cabins, which helps when you are travelling with another family.

The catch, which is not Disney's fault

The app only receives while your phone is awake and on the ship's network. Phones drop wifi when they sleep. So messages queue and arrive together when somebody next unlocks their phone.

For "shall we meet at dinner" that is fine. For "we're leaving the kids' club now" it can be twenty minutes late, and on a Disney ship that is precisely the message people are sending.

Every line's app works this way — the comparison is here — so it is worth knowing rather than being surprised by it.

Children's phones and the obvious worry

Disney sailings carry a lot of families with older children roaming the ship, and the usual arrangement is that the child has a phone with no signal and no package.

The Navigator chat covers that, free, as long as the child's phone is awake and on the network. The delay above is the thing to be realistic about rather than the cost.

What to use alongside

Given Disney's chat is free and good, the honest answer is that you need less here than on a line that charges.

CruiseLink is still worth having for two reasons: it does not depend on the ship's network at all, so it keeps working when a phone has dropped wifi, and it behaves the same on any line, so it is not something to relearn on your next cruise with somebody else.

Its limits, plainly: it reaches only the group you set up, everyone needs it installed before you sail, and a message travels when phones come near enough rather than instantly across a whole ship.
