MSC Cruises wifi

Sold per device with one device connected at a time, split into a browsing tier and a dearer streaming tier, and — unusually — MSC does not publish the price publicly. You see it in your booking area after you have booked.

The hidden price

Most lines put their wifi pricing on a public page. MSC's appears in your personal area once you have a booking, described there as already discounted.

That matters for a practical reason: it means every price you find on a blog, including any you might find here, is second-hand and probably stale. Look in your own booking. It is the only number that applies to you.

This page deliberately gives no figures for that reason. The structure below does not change; the prices do.

One device at a time, but you can swap

This is MSC's real quirk and it cuts both ways.

You can add several devices to one package, but only one may be connected at any moment. Log out on the phone, log in on the laptop. That is genuinely more flexible than lines that bind a package to a single handset for the voyage.

It is also not a family plan. Two people cannot both be online on one package, so a couple who want to message each other through it are still buying two. Whether you need that many is the question worth asking.

The two tiers, and what the cheap one forbids

MSC's own wording on the browsing tier is unusually clear, and worth reading before you buy: with that package it is not possible to view videos, use video or music streaming sites, or video chat.

So if the reason you are buying wifi is to see the grandchildren on a video call, the basic tier will not do it and you need the streaming one. This is the single most common way people buy the wrong thing. What video calling is like at sea even when it is allowed.

What is free

The onboard network itself, as on every line. That runs the MSC for Me app — the programme, bookings, your account — without any package. The free-network-versus-paid-internet distinction, which is where the savings are.

Reaching your own party

Given one device at a time, using MSC's wifi to message your own family is awkward as well as expensive: the person you are messaging has to be the one currently logged in.

CruiseLink sidesteps it entirely. Messages pass straight between the phones in your group over Bluetooth and the ship's local network — no package, no logging in and out, free, in airplane mode.

It reaches only the group you set up, everyone needs it installed before you sail, and a message travels when phones come near enough rather than instantly across a whole ship.
