CruiseLink

Does Facebook Messenger work on a cruise ship?

Only if somebody has bought the ship's internet. Messenger reaches people by going out to Facebook's servers and back, and at sea that road does not exist unless you pay for it. There is no offline mode and no local trick.

What you get on a package

On most lines' wifi, Messenger behaves much as it does at home for text. Calling is the part to check: cheaper tiers often exclude voice and video even when messaging works, and that is rarely obvious on the purchase screen.

If your line sells a cheaper "social" tier, Messenger is usually in it. That can be good value if what you want is to keep up with people at home. Whether a package is worth it, by what you need it for.

Where it stops making sense

Using Messenger to reach somebody who is on the same ship means your message travels up to a satellite, across to a data centre, and back down — to reach a phone two decks away. And because packages are sold per device, a family of four doing that is four packages.

That is the most common way people overspend on a cruise, and it buys nothing that a local option would not do better.

Not everybody wants to go through Facebook anyway

Plenty of people keep in touch with their family without having Facebook on their phone at all, and a holiday is a strange time to be asked to install it. If one person in your party is not on Messenger, the group chat does not work, and you are back to leaving notes on the cabin door.

What to use for the people you came with

CruiseLink passes messages straight between the phones in your group over Bluetooth and the ship's local network. No package, no account, nothing to sign up to, free. It works with every phone in airplane mode.

The limits, plainly: it reaches only the group you set up, everyone needs it installed before you sail, and a message travels when phones come near enough — directly, or carried by somebody else in your group — so it is not instant across a whole ship.

Keep Messenger for people at home. Use something local for people on the boat. How the other apps behave at sea.
