Norwegian Cruise Line app chat
Paid, per person, for the voyage — widely reported at around $9.95, which makes it the dearest of the lines that charge. The app itself is free and so is the useful half of it; messaging is unlocked separately, by each person, individually.
What a family actually pays
This is where it stings. The fee is per person, not per booking, and both ends of a conversation need to have paid. A family of four is four unlocks to talk to each other — call it forty dollars to arrange where to have dinner.
For comparison: Carnival charges around $5 a head, while Royal Caribbean, Princess and Disney include theirs. The full comparison.
What you get for it
It is a decent feature. It reaches anyone on your sailing who has also paid, not just your own cabin, and it runs on the ship's network so it does not need an internet package on top. If you are meeting up with friends from another booking it earns its money.
And it is already on your phone, because you want the app for the daily programme anyway.
The complaint, which is not NCL's fault
Messages only arrive while your phone is awake and on the ship's network. Phones drop the network when they sleep, so everything lands in a heap when you next unlock. Every line's app behaves this way; it just stings more when you have paid per person for it.
Whether to buy it
- Travelling as one party? Hard to justify. Four unlocks to message people you are on holiday with is a lot for what it does.
- Meeting people from other bookings? Then it is the only thing that reaches them, and it is worth the money.
- Mixed? One or two people buy it for the cross-group coordination, and the family uses something free among themselves.
The free part
CruiseLink passes messages straight between the phones in your group over Bluetooth and the ship's local network. No unlock, no account, no package, free, and it works in airplane mode.
It will not reach the people from the other booking — that is what NCL's chat is for. It reaches only the group you set up, everyone needs it before sailing, and a message travels when phones come near enough rather than instantly across a whole ship.
